Wallpaper Wednesday

This week the photograph for our wallpaper was taken while I was driving in the Florida Keys (Islamorada to be specific). The day was beautiful of course and dusk was no exception. This is one more reason to love the Golden Hour.

This photograph is also from Sam and I’s epic trip to the west coast, I took it as we drove from LA to San Fran with two of our favorite girls! Somewhere before wine country, but after Santa Barbara.

Wallpaper Wednesday

My husband and I just finished an epic series of trips. We flew to Scottsdale, AZ for our future God Daughters baby shower (Elle should be here this month! Very excited!), rented a car and drove to LA (got to see so many of my awesome friends and family), drove with one of my best friends and her sister to San Fran (where we got to meet so many new friends), flew home, had a visit from the awesome Cousin Pete, flew to Portland, OR (and totally fell in love with it out there). I think we completed all these trips in less than 4 weeks. Now I could promise that I’ll be better at posting Wallpaper Wednesdays and I was just flaking on these posts because of the nature of being on the road, but one quick look in the archives would dispell this myth fast. I’m terrible at it. This time last year (shhhh don’t tell anyone) I had my awesome intern (and super talented) photographer turned, assistant to the city planner, turned romancer of my little sister (she’s moving in with him this fall) Matt Mornick write all my blog posts. Go to his website and check out his blog posts. If he wasn’t distracted by his new socially responsible path of hopefully becoming a city planner someday he could deviate and make an amazing photographer. So now it’s up to me. To try and focus (ambitious). Can I do it? Can I actually buckle down and dedicate one blog post a week to an image that dear reader, you can post as your wallpaper? I hope so but won’t’ be holding my breath either.

My husband Sam posted this image on Facebook just after our trip, guess he was too excited to wait to show everyone (given my history with posting wallpapers I will let him off the hook). He’s had this as his background image since then (3 weeks?) he loves it and so do I. Making this a great image to start with!

Wallpaper Wednesday Resurected!

Lets see if I can stay on the wagon posting these here. It’s after 5 on Wednesday, but it is still Wednesday. Can anyone guess where this was taken? It’s not what you would expect! mystery hotel in South Beach. Any guesses as to which??

On Thursday, after I didn’t have time to put one up last week too. So I get an “F” at Wallpapers this month. Maybe your November is too busy also and you haven’t noticed. Or maybe you loved the Sedona, AZ wallpaper so much that you were happy to get it for an extra week. Well, I’m flattered. Here is another one for you to enjoy since you enjoyed the last one so much.

I usually try to get these up early in the day but after retouching somewhere around 450 pairs of shoes over the start of the week I became very single tasked. So if you are a blog subscriber, you’ll see this today and if you are more of a come check it out through Facebook or LinkedIn I’ll post tomorrow morning to promote it all.

The red rocks of Sedona, the only time I ever went, had an insane freak rainstorm blow in. The contrast of the light on the red rock with the dark clouds was almost too beautiful for words. Fortunately, I had my camera so no words were needed.

Let the headlines read, “Miami Photographer, Kate Benson visits the Grand Canyon”, okay, so maybe it’s not quite as exciting as I’d like to sell it. We hiked 14 miles on day one into the Havasupai Town/reservation. It was my first time on a reservation and it was eye opening. It’s hard to imagine that there is a village of people living 8 miles in the bottom of the Grand Canyon having to helicopter in everything the need and out anything they don’t anymore. Seeing it for myself, the social injustice of life for Native Americans caught me off guard. In a landscape that will knock the wind out of you one couldn’t think of a more beautiful place to be. But not to live. I could spend months down there with the fascinating people. Learning about their lives, photographing them. It’s true what one of the women said to us as we left, “we’re stuck here”. After driving 60 miles from rt 66 (which is already in the middle of the desert) and knowing that these people only get around by walking or riding horses and mules you see that yes, they really are stuck there. But I’ll save the photos of town for later, today I want to show you a stunning image of what could easily be from Africa but exists here in our country. I imagine hippos down at the bottom of the waterfall, wallowing around in the water. Or perhaps the image is more prehistoric and it would be better suited if a pterodactyl flew through the shot. One thing is certain it is hard to believe it exists around mile 9 of our hike, just outside the Havasupai village.

Opps… I skipped last week. Almost skipped this week too. This was my bad. There really wasn’t much of an excuse, as I was driving away on Wednesday to the West coast of Florida (Sarasota, St. Pete, Tampa area) to celebrate my father’s 70th birthday I though about how I felt like I had forgotten something. By the time I realized it was to post my wallpaper I was almost through Alligator Alley and not interested in turning back to Miami to post a photo. So, I apologize. Hopefully I won’t do this next week as well as I’ll be on my way to the Grand Canyon (cool pictures to come from that I hope) on Wednesday. But here is a little beach shot for everyone, since it’s Wednesday and we have to work and not go to the beach, at least it can be our inspiration to get to the weekend.

This week is a little preview of last weeks photo shoot for Donald J. Pliner. It’s a creative play on one of the images they are using for the Fall 2011 line. Daniela from Elite Models (Miami and New York) was our wonderful model, Colleen from Ford Artists did hair and makeup while the Donald J. Pliner girls, Marisol and Sarah did the styling (who better to style the clothes for a shoe brand than the girls who know it best!). Everyone did a fantastic job and soon I’ll have my act together enough to post some of the other photo’s we took that day. Look for a version of this shot on the Donald J. Pliner website and email marketing soon! In the meantime, enjoy the fashion background!

Many apologies for the girls out there. Once again your voices have been overshadowed by the cheering from the men who enjoy wallpaper Wednesday. So per requested, we have another hottie. Sam, (yeah my husband Sam) asked for a bikini specifically. Being the happy to oblige wife that I am I’ve posted this shot. Summers not over yet. I hope this inspires you when you sit down at your computer to make plans to go to the pool or beach after work. Unless your freelance, then maybe the inspiration will send you during work hours (shame of shames!!) for a quick dip. If your in the north, you won’t have many opportunities left as alas, it is September. I think you’ve all seen this shot before, but have you ever seen it as a background for your desktop (wink wink)?

I love this long exposure of the pier at South Point. It’s true photography of Miami, the real Miami. Not too far under the Art Deco and neon rest the memories of a community that went through a lot of change. The pier is abandoned but not torn down. Just gated off so no one passes. Sometimes a lot of Miami feels like that. A place where change happened so fast that there wasn’t time to take away the old and unused. Instead we built around and over it, learning to ignore the past of the city.

A reminder why we live in Miami. This happens once or twice a year. The most insane fog you’ve ever seen and unless you can wake up early and get above the cloud line, you would never know it happened.

Okay, my bad. I didn’t do this last week. But to be honest, I didn’t do anything I needed to last week other than eat, sleep, shoot and retouch (there wasn’t that much eating and sleeping in truth). So it killed me not to post on Wednesday. Honestly! And to make up for it, since the only people I know who use wallpaper Wednesday are boys (sorry girls but you need to speak up if you want VIP treatment) here’s a little hottie for you. It’s still a PG hottie, actually it’s a head shot so it’s not much for a sexy photo at all. But she has one good looking mug!

Is there a better place in the country to spend July than in Maine? Would love suggestions because I find it hard to believe it gets more perfect. This Wednesday, treat yourself to an ice cream from the homemade ice cream stand down the road, eat some blueberries off that bush out back, and fire up the grill to put on a nice dinner (ever tried grilled lobster, you haven’t lived till you have indulged in that).

A newfound hobby for my husband and I is dragon boat racing.  If you paddle, more power to you.  If even the slightest inkling exists to be on the water paddling with friends, then dragon boat racing is for you.  Good exercise with great people.  So grab a paddle and get on the water!  Happy Wednesday.

Blushing Vineyards
When I magnify my own imagination
to the subtle calibration
of your thoughts, each intonation
moves our house of cards
into blushing vineyards.

from the terracotta veranda,
through its arch of flowers trailing old propaganda,
i don't view God and Fate, or Them
in the same way again.

we give and grow out of bartered bygones
into kings and queens of hearts and diamonds;
searching for a place to fit
outside this caricature of mind, mouth and mit-

so we stay, walking or sat
in every laughing moment, doing this or that-
now and into other times
for as long as these grapes come back
onto our vines.
