Friday Reflection

There was a turning point. I don’t know when it happened, but within the last few years certianly. It was the point where my goals for my business changed. Maturity set in. I guess that is a good way to look at it.
Instead of being elitist, thinking someone was insulting my abilities to offer me a “lower standard” gig (sorry, but these would be the gigs that most commercial photographers turn their noses up at) I realized that if someone asked for my services, I should be excited about it. No matter what the gig. It’s always a compliment to have someone want to hire you. I can tell the industry I am in has scared off a lot of people from asking commercial photographers for shoots, this would be indicated by the number of times someone calls and says “I don’t know if you even do this sort of thing”. But why? Why did I for so long turn my nose up at jobs that I can do and make people happy doing? Today these gigs, small by some standards, huge by others make me happy. Through doing them, I’ve learned that I can find equal fufillment in bringing great photos to companies and consumers. It’s a shame I turned my nose up before, but that is a lesson in business I had to learn. How would I have appreciated those phone calls, and turned them into compliments otherwise?

So today, I spent the morning shooting and retouching jewelry for a multi-million dollar company, and at 4pm I ran to Key Biscayne and took a portrait for a family that hasn’t been able to get a photo together in years. The daughter is mega talented (singer, I’ve heard her, she is fantastic!) and heading off to Berkley soon, this was one of the last chances the family had to take a shot together before she starts Life. It’s true, both really do fulfill me in different ways, but both are massively fulfilling.

I hope it’s the start to an equally awesome weekend, for you and for me.

Wallpaper Wednesday

A reminder why we live in Miami. This happens once or twice a year. The most insane fog you’ve ever seen and unless you can wake up early and get above the cloud line, you would never know it happened.

Wallpaper Wednesday

Okay, my bad. I didn’t do this last week. But to be honest, I didn’t do anything I needed to last week other than eat, sleep, shoot and retouch (there wasn’t that much eating and sleeping in truth). So it killed me not to post on Wednesday. Honestly! And to make up for it, since the only people I know who use wallpaper Wednesday are boys (sorry girls but you need to speak up if you want VIP treatment) here’s a little hottie for you. It’s still a PG hottie, actually it’s a head shot so it’s not much for a sexy photo at all. But she has one good looking mug!

Kate Benson in The Light of Florida Exhibition, and other arty things to do this weekend.

In Florida, our summers are rough, let’s be honest. Photo shoots turn into games of dodge the thunderstorm/shoot before the sweat seeps through the model’s clothes or heat exhaustion sets in. So December is when we get our BBQs, beaches, basically we get outside back. Art is synonymous with December here in Miami. We have our wonderful Art Basel at the beginning of the month. So if this summer has felt a little long to you and you want to pretend it is December…. (or maybe this is just a really long winded lead into my plug). This weekend is perfect! We have Saturday night art walk in Wynwood where you can stroll through galleries sipping wine and discussing the artists intentions (museums, are you listening? wine + art = awesome). Tonight at Bakehouse an amazingly talented artist ENRIQUE SENDRA, has a solo exhibition opening (you may have read about it in the Miami Herald last Sunday, my good friend Matt wrote and photographed the article). Or if your residing in the north, The Light of Florida (an ASMP sponsored show) is up at the Mark K. Wheeler Gallery at the Art Institute of Ft. Lauderdale -featuring a piece from yours truly.
Hope to see you at one of these stops this weekend!

Abby Lynn

Shame on me. Instead of being a good blogger and posting when I wasn’t working, I was playing. Provincetown…..Maine….. Bimini…. jealous? Sorry, being that summer is the slow season in Miami I feel like I have to rub in that when I haven’t been working I was playing and traveling. It’s only fair that I get to brag once in a while, I host gaggles of friends and family in the winter months so that obligates them to return the favor and host me when the weather is rotten where I live.
But it hasn’t been all play. Quite the opposite. I booked all these fun trips thinking I would be board out of my mind with summer here. Instead it has been pure madness. The photography business is booming (which is always good), so goodbye weekends, goodbye running to the beach before dinner. The penance for my playing is that I get no breaks. Even Sam has felt the wrath of my insane summer (if you promise me you’ll help stack my photographs in Photoshop, you better deliver, that’s all I’m saying). Seriously, Matt, are you listening to this? Hope your having fun in NYC…. (teasing, only teasing).

So here’s the proof I’m alive because when you don’t even see me on Facebook you know it’s bad. A couple of shots from the stunning Abby Lynn’s photo shoot. She’s a talented singer and incredibly fun girl. Not to hard to photograph either 🙂 a complete natural in front of the camera. The photography is for multiple uses, hopefully a new website (we all want to see more of you Abby!), CD cover art, etc.
